NEWS UPDATE! JUNE 27TH 2001
SPECIAL STAR WARS TOYSHOW NEWS REPORT:
The Annual U.S.A International Toy Fair 2001 was
held in New York Mid February. Amongst the hundreds of new toy lines, companies
going all out to impress every attendee and the huge displays present this
year, stood Hasbro’s Continuing Star Wars line. Whilst I will be previewing
other larger lines in the coming months, the Star Wars one has an interesting
story. With Hasbro agreeing to down size the Star Wars market in preparation
mode for Star Wars Episode Two next year, Lucasfilm were very quick to support
them with prototype sculpture busts of some of the main characters in the
2002’s Movie with one looking like a cross between a Bounty Hunter aka: Boba
Fett’s armour with a Lobot type head on top! This year Hasbro will introduce the ‘Palm Talker’
series for Classic Star Wars. These are based on the Japanese super deformed
series; this means large heads, short arms, bodies and legs sized to about the
palm of your hand! Yes it will be an interesting concept for a Star Wars line,
but many people won’t agree on them for a start. That line includes: Boba Fett,
Chewbacca, C-3PO, Darth Vader, Stormtrooper and everyone’s favourite little
Droid R2-D2. 2001’s Power Of The Jedi (POTJ) 12 Inch Doll Series
will include: 100th Edition Doll: Luke Skywalker with: both Tatooine
and X-Wing Fighter Pilot gear (something a long time coming), Death Star
Commander, Death Star Droid (with Mouser Droid 2Pk) which is simply an awesome
Doll, Death Star Trooper with removable helmet, Bossk, 4-Lom, IG-88, Captain
Tarpals and Kaadu (2pk), plus Han Solo Stormtrooper (Trash Compactor), The
Bantha & Tusken Raider (2Pk) was not as yet confirmed. Judging from the
look of the line at toy fair, some say the window box style packaging will be a
little stronger this year, however we have all heard this before, so we can
only hope? This Year
marks Hasbro's return to the ever so popular growing Expanded Universe Series.
This time Hasbro bring out some of Episode One Characters in the Expanded
Universe 'concept range', which was first made famous over a year after it was
first deleted in 1998. Darth Maul Sith Apprentice, a figure style based on
concept designs, looks very impressive close up. Comic book and pre-production
concepts based upon early drawings, have inspired the release of: Cold Training
Obi-Wan Kenobi (who has a lot of great detail), Jedi Training Qui-Gon Jinn.
Originally the series was going to be 'Expanded', however it now appears that
only possibly five characters will be produced. In a year where detail will make or destroy a toy
company’s reputation, Hasbro have finally listened to the fan’s screaming for
‘Spawn’ or ‘McFarland’ type detail in the Star Wars universe. 2001 will see the
return to the Deluxe (2pk) Series range, with no word on possible Cinema Scene
3-Packs thus far. The POTJ Deluxe Series, though still sketchy at this stage
will include: Luke Hoth with Bacta Tank Medical Unit, which has been on the
cards for the last 5 years, Now finally seeing the light of day! Darth Maul
Crusade, (supposed to the best so far?), Leia Slave re-sculpt with Sail Barge Deck
Cannon and the 2nd Fan favourite recently voted upon at Hasbro's Web Site:
Amanaman (2pk) with most likely a Salacious Crumb counterpart. As collectors of all galaxies continue to scream
out for more detail for their dollar, as was the case early in Hasbro’s ’96
line when collectors preferred the detail on Playmates’ Star Trek: Deep Space
Nine figure line. Hasbro have finally had to meet some requirements, even if
some people are a little annoyed with an almost G.I. Joe type action feature
introduced into Star Wars figures. 2001 will see the very best representations
of any Star Wars Characters so far. Some thought the 4 Inch Episode One figures
when first released were hot, well 2001 will bring out the best detail ever
since in a galaxy far, far away: Power Of The Jedi (POTJ) 2001 4” Action Figures:
Please note the following includes some characters just appearing on the
Australian market as we went to print: Aurra Sing (Bounty Hunter), Battle Droid
(Boomer Damage), Ben Kenobi Jedi Master (EP1 Version), Bespin Security Guard:
almost looks like a comic version, Boss Nass (Gungan Temple), Chewbacca
(Millennium Falcon) Mechanic: will be finally a taller size. Darth Vader
Emperor's Wrath (the lightening bolt version), Ellorrs Madak: better known as
one of the Duros (Classic Alien looking) brothers from the Star Wars Cantina
and The first Hasbro Web-Site Fan voted Figure for release- finally coming mid
year, Fobe and Beed (Just Released in Australia), Gungan Warrior (Just released
in Australia), Han Solo Bespin Capture (Just released in Australia), Han Solo
(Death Star Escape with trooper's belt), IG-88, Imperial Scoutrooper (re-sculpt
will be very popular!), Imperial Sandtrooper (re-sculpt version with Grey bib),
Jar-Jar Binks (Tatooine Tongue version), Ketwol: The Special Edition Character
finally arrives in 01, after being on Hasbro's database also for some time-
This Alien's detail is going to be a fan favourite! K-3PO: Hoth Echo Base
Protocol Droid, Lando Calrissian (Bespin re-sculpt! this version is much better
than the first He-man addition), Luke X-Wing: (Removable Helmet) another
awesome re-sculpt, Mon Calamari Officer, Plo Koon (Jedi Master), Princess Leia
Bespin Escape, Queen Amidala Theed Invasion (the best version!), R2-Q5
(Imperial Black Astromech Droid with Holo Death Star 2 stand), Sabe: Amidala's
decoy aide, Sae Sae Tin (Jedi Master), Shmi Skywalker (Anakin's Mum), Tessek: a
Quarren better known originally as "Squid Head". Although some would say this looks like a big list,
beware some products may be few and far between releases, Hasbro will be
concentrating on Lord Of the Rings for Xmas as well as Episode 2 in 2002. The
B-Wing fighter, Twin Pod Cloud Car and Imperial T.I.E Interceptor 2-Packs will
be the Vehicles of 2001 and Hasbro still have not counted out a possible
Imperial Shuttle Tydirium release.
